As electric vehicles (EVs) continue to gain popularity across the UK, some drivers still have concerns about their safety — especially when it comes to day-to-day use. One surprising myth that continues to surface is the fear of getting an electric shock while washing an EV.
According to a recent survey by Autoglym, 21% of UK drivers believe this could happen. But is there any truth to it?
Spoiler alert: Absolutely not.
Electric Shock From an EV? Not a Chance⚡
The survey found that 46% of 25–34 year olds & 40% of 18–24 year olds were unsure about the safety of cleaning an electric vehicle. In contrast, only 8% of 55–64 year olds shared that concern.
However, motoring expert and EV campaigner Quentin Willson set the record straight:
“Getting a shock when cleaning an EV is a very old myth and completely false. Manufacturers rigorously test electric vehicles for water resistance, including specialised soak tests. If this were a real issue, we’d have known about it years ago.”
In fact, EVs are designed with fully sealed high-voltage systems and insulated components, so water can’t reach any dangerous parts. Whether it’s rain, snow, or a jet wash — your EV is built to handle it.
Is Washing an EV Any Different from a Petrol or Diesel Car? 🧼
Not really.
According to Lee Irving, Technical Training Manager at Autoglym:
“While we recommend avoiding direct water contact with the charging port, cleaning an EV is no more dangerous than cleaning any petrol or diesel vehicle.”
In fact, there’s one small difference that makes EVs easier to clean:
Regenerative braking means less brake dust on the wheels.
That means your EV might stay cleaner for longer - a bonus for anyone who takes pride in a spotless car.
Regional Differences in EV Knowledge 🗺️
The survey also found that EV misconceptions vary by location:
• 45% of London drivers believed a shock was possible when washing an EV
• Only 7% of Welsh drivers thought the same
It’s a reminder that as we move toward cleaner transport, educating drivers is just as important as offering the vehicles themselves.
